Building Connections and Community at Colorado College
In October, Artistic Director Yvonne Montoya visited Colorado College in Colorado Springs. Hosted by the Hulbert Center for Southwest Studies, Montoya had the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations around art, power, and resistance within the context of Stories from Home. One highlight of the visit was her guest teaching in a convergence course, blending Dr. Pallavi Sriram’s “Philosophies of the Body: Bodies and Power” with Dr. Karen Roybal’s “Art, Power, & Resistance.” Part of the class was to engage in a storytelling and dance master class wherein students created their own danced stories from home.
Another highlight was Montoya's choreographer talk at a student luncheon allowing her to connect with students and faculty while sharing her experience with place making and dance in the context of Stories from Home and an older project Dancing the Mural.
A heartfelt thanks to Dr. Karen Roybal and Dr. Pallavi Sriram for inviting us to be a part of such an enriching experience. And to the National Dance Project for supporting this work. We look forward to future connections!
