Dance in the Desert Research Report: Spotlighting New Mexico dance artists ☀️

We asked the Dance in the Desert NM dance artists cohort if they had any strategic recommendations for funders, foundations, policy makers, and arts agencies to better support working dance artists in New Mexico. Here is their response:

Infrastructure Grants – Fund the creation or renovation of affordable, safe studio and performance spaces to address the dual challenges of space scarcity and geographic isolation.

Create and Fund Formal Mentorship Programs– Pair experienced studio owners and cultural educators with emerging dancers and teachers.

Develop a Mobile/Pop-Up Outreach Model – Deploy traveling workshops and pop-up performances to reach remote communities (Roswell, Taos, Alamogordo) and to reduce geographic isolation.

Cultural-Education Funding – Sponsor workshops and curriculum development that focus on the customs and traditions of folkloric, Mexican, and New Mexican folk dance, as highlighted by respondents.

Travel & Knowledge-Exchange Logistics – Provide travel subsidies and logistical support for participants to attend regional meetings or to share expertise across towns.
