Reflections on Co-Facilitating Panels at the WAA Conference

During the Western Arts Alliance (WAA) Conference in San Diego, I had the privilege of co-facilitating two panels that were part of this year’s Conexiones track. These sessions were not just opportunities to share knowledge but also to connect with other leaders and artists within the Latine community.

On Tuesday, August 27, 2024, I co-facilitated the Latine Mujeres Leadership Circle: Unlocking the Chingona Within. Sharing space with Karina Sainz, Julianna Crespo, and Ana María Alvarez was an inspiring experience. We delved into the powerful journeys of women who represent the diverse facets of Latinidad in leadership roles. The conversations were rich with insights, and it was empowering to be part of a discussion that celebrated the strength, resilience, and unique perspectives of Latine women in leadership.

The following day, Wednesday, August 28, 2024, I was part of the Cultivating Latine Audiences Through Dance and Music panel. Joining me on this panel were David Herrera from David Herrera Performance Company, and Vanessa Sanchez and Tanya Benitez from La Mezcla. Together, we explored how contemporary dance and music, created for and by Latine communities, serve as a catalyst for connection. We emphasized the importance of centering Latine stories and aesthetics on stages throughout the West and beyond.

What made this session even more special was that it was moderated by Safos Dance Theatre’s very own company dancer and rehearsal assistant, the incredible Delia Ibañez. Delia brought her deep understanding and passion to the discussion, guiding the conversation with grace and insight.

These panels were a reminder of the power of collaboration and the importance of creating spaces where Latine voices can be heard and celebrated. It was an honor to contribute to these meaningful conversations and to be part of a community committed to fostering connection through the arts.
