Work on the border: BNAR

February 28, 2018

I was invited to work as the local (AZ-based) choreographer to assist with the Binational Arts Residency (BNAR) featuring Ana María Álvarez (co-founder CONTRA-TIEMPO). In the weeks leading up to Ana María arriving in Arizona, I drove down to Douglas, AZ/Agua Prieta, SON to co-facilitate three dance and theater workshops with Xanthia Angel Walker,  Matthew Mendez, Paula Ortega of Rising Youth Theater based in Phoenix,  Bibi Harris and Alan Rubio of BB Danceur Academy based in Douglas,  Juan Luis Angeles Gonzalez of Ballet de Agua Prieta and Gerardo Villalobos Garcia of Casa de la Cultura Agua Prieta Sonora both based in Agua Prieta, and M. Jenea Sánchez of Border Arts Corridor. After a dress rehearsal with Ana María, the project culminated with a performance on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border on Saturday February 24, 2018. The dancers were so talented and generous!! Such an amazing experience!!!

My dance company, Safos Dance Theatre partnered to host Ana María in Tucson facilitating a salsa rueda master class for Tucson Magnet High School dance students. A special thank you to Buddy who was out of school that weekend and had to accompany during the long cold hours of rehearsal for this project.
